The Technological Institute of Costa Rica (TEC) has celebrated the XV edition of the traditional Fair Business Ideas, organized by the School of Companies Management.

It treats of boosting the entrepreneurship culture by means of feasible business ideas, that can be commercialized and have a scientific and technical knowledge. All the ideas are coming from students of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica.

In this edition the creativity and innovation came from more than 180 students, with ideas such as a soap with solar protection, bio-combustibles from waste, a spray for rubbish bags with, an insulin juice and a eco-floor among other original proposals.

In total 36 projects presented took part in the fair, distributed in three categories:

  • “Eco-friendly products and services ”
  • “Technologies of Information and Communication”
  • “Other products and innovative services”.

During more than six hours students from Computation Engineering, Management, Biotechnology and Industrial Design Engineering, explained to the jury and the public in general their projects, the innovative aspects and which are their market goals, among others.

The Opening Ceremony

The fair was opened with the presence of the Chancellor of the Technological of Costa Rica, Doctor Julio César Calvo, the Director of the Management School, Mr. Alejandro Masís, Mr. Jerry Alfaro President of the Students Association, Mrs. Cecilia Lamb, attendant of innovation of the General Direction of SME of the Economy, Industry and Trade Ministry and Mr.Jorge Solano, from the Mutual Cartago of Savings and Loans (MUCAP).

The winners

The first prize of this edition in the category of “Ece-friendly Products and Services” was for the business project “Cibus 3.0”, an initiative that looks to produce bio-combustibles from industrial dairy waste. This project was composed by 13 engineers in biotechnology and one material engineer.

“Sukia Tour” obtained the second place in the same category with an initiative that pretends “to create an innovative tour of three days to give the opportunity to have contact with spiritual energies from the mother earth”. This idea was created by five students from Management in Sustainable Tourism.

In the category of “Information and Communication Technologies”, the first place was for seven students from Industrial Design Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Management with the project: “Battery laptops-solutions”. This idea consists in an electronic device that serves as a substitute for laptop chargers, besides protects the laptop battery and saves energy.

The second place of this category was for “Smart Ideaz”, a project from six students of Management that developed a device called “Innova Control” that locates the remote control of the television.The user also will be able to listen the TV from the remote control, without needing to interrupt to the rest of the people.

For the category of “Other products and innovative services”, an “Insulin Juice” created by five students from Electronic Engineering and Computation resulted the winning project. This juice pretends to substitute the injections of insulin that people with diabetes has to inject daily.

The winning projects were chosen by jury composed by TEC professors and external experts. The first prizes received ¢225 000 colones as a reward and the seconds places ¢125 000 colones.
